Ranking the versions of Windows used and a description for each of them
I guess for me, I'd switch XP and 2000, not only because they were superficially similar, but 2000 had stability that was leaps and bounds better than XP - if you could live with some compatibility issues with legacy software. The rest would stay the same. More on reddit.com

What is the actual difference between different Windows versions?
The difference surface between each version is MASSIVE. Even the most careless person cannot help but notice the following landslide changes: Windows Firewall (Windows XP) Windows Security Center (Windows XP SP2) User Account Control (Windows Vista) Internet Explorer 7 (Windows Vista) Desktop Window Manager (Windows Vista) Windows PE/RE, which forever changed how we install Windows (Windows Vista) DirectX 11 (Windows 7) Networking innovations for Wi-Fi, Home Groups and Internet connectivity (Windows 7) Microsoft Store (Windows 8) Microsoft Defender Antivirus, formerly Windows Defender (Windows 8) Mandatory updates that you can postpone, but not indefinitely; their huge size (1 GB) is difficult to miss (Windows 10) Emoji Panel and enhanced Touch Keyboard (Windows 10) Windows Subsystem for Linux (Windows 10) Windows Terminal (Windows 10) Microsoft Edge (Windows 10) A sharp increase in system requirements (Windows 11) Edit: There a blog post on the Confidential Files! detailing the complexities of Windows XP era. It's a list of things the author had to do each time he reinstalled Windows . Newer versions of Windows made that list irrelevant. You can clearly see how massively different Windows was back then. r/windows on Reddit: Ranking the versions of Windows used and a description for each of them
November 14, 2022 -

I will be ranking the versions of Windows that I've used in my lifetime based on features (with respect to their time), UI, layout and most importantly how much I enjoyed using them. I expect a few of these positions to be controversial.

  1. Windows XP

  2. Windows Vista and Windows 7 (both very similar)

  3. Windows 11

  4. Windows 2000

  5. Windows 10

  6. Windows 8/8.1

Windows XP is the GOAT. Great performance, lovely layout, soothing system sounds and excellent interface. All of these aspects made it feel so personal and welcoming to use. Of course, I pretty much grew up using it the most from my toddler days until I was 9 so the nostalgia is strong too.

I loved using Windows Vista because of its UI overhaul (especially the Windows Aero theme), the gadgets that were introduced (clock, calendar, notes etc.) and the cranked up performance that made XP feel snail-like. I also was addicted to Purble Place which launched with Vista so there's that. Contrary to other users, I personally faced no issue at all with stability or hardware compatibility but it's worth noting that I first started using it when I was 9 (months before Windows 7 released).

Windows 7 as I mentioned is pretty much a carbon copy of Windows Vista with a more modern looking and polished taskbar so of course I enjoyed it too. The personalization and theme packs with custom system sounds were also amazing and I'd spend hours on end playing around with those.

Windows 2000 is there just because it was my first memory of using computers, and was what piqued my fascination for them too. Plus, that Windows logo (also the subreddit icon) is just so iconic.

I placed Windows 8 and Windows 10 here only because I've unfortunately used them, that too for 8 years combined. Such a pity that these are what we got after the blockbuster Windows 7, because they were just absolute garbage. The puke-worthy layout, "live tiles" and jarring icons that literally no one asked for really tainted my reception of Windows and I went as far as hating Windows as a whole because I thought it could only get more worse from there on.

Thankfully, all of that is in the past with Windows 11 which traces back to Windows' original roots by undoing the blunders committed in the previous two versions and giving us what is essentially a modernized Windows 7 like experience. My only issue is with the Start Menu, which of course I've fixed using StartAllBack to make it look very much like Windows 7 now.

Okay, that was a rather lengthy post. If you made it this far, thanks for taking the time to read it. How will you rank the versions of Windows that you have used?

April 4, 2025 - Microsoft is the first to admit that it missed the boat when it came to mobile, and the company tried to make up for lost time with the touch-centric Windows 8. The operating system featured a dual interface, one with mobile-like apps and another more like the traditional Windows desktop. Much to the chagrin of Windows traditionalists, the Start menu was nowhere to be found in Windows 8, replaced by Charms that slid out from the side. The Windows 8.1 upgrade addressed some of the shortcomings for desktop users, but by then, the version's reputation as a loser was sealed.

r/windows on Reddit: What is the actual difference between different Windows versions?
December 2, 2023 -

When I was a kid I was using WinXP, then it was Win7 through my teenage years and for the last couple of years I've used Win10.

Aside from graphical differences, I personally haven't noticed any differences. Even when you program for WinAPI using the windows.h library it compiles just as well on all of those.

The tutorials almost always work universally, maybe like names and locations of buttons change but that's it.

The origin of my question stemmed from the fact that while Win11 is so bulky not every pc can handle it, WinXP requires only 64MB of RAM.

How does this happen?
