Free wood working bench plans or ones worth the money? I have a bunch of rough poplar..and just got a jointer and planer..
A few thoughts from a professional furniture maker joiner. If you have never used a bench before, you arent really sure what you will need. Planing and sawing require more lateral stability than you think. It cant be too heavy or too stable. The vice and hold-down setup is very personal, and can be very expensive. I can do just about everything (and more) that any vice and dog setup can do with 2 jorgensen wooden hand screws (the kind with 2 blocks of wood and 2 steel threads) and 2 big f clamps. Adding 2 more handscrews gives you insane versatility. Maybe concentrate on a rock solid bench with an eye towards adding vices and holdfasts later? More on reddit.com

I built the portable Moravian workbench as my first project. It was a bit ambitious for me but I learned a lot and the result was great. There are plans and a build video on woodandshop.com More on reddit.com

I built the Paul Sellers bench. Very sturdy. Great step-by-step videos on YouTube. I believe it is meant to be disassembled as well. I’m very happy with it! More on reddit.com

I am looking for the workbench plans. Something along the lines of the minimal timber workbench https://www.rexkrueger.com/store/minimum-timber-bench, but preferably with even simpler joinery and free :). Any advice would be appreciated.

Go to Lost Art Press here: https://blog.lostartpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/AWB_Consumer_June-2020_v5.1-1.pdf and get the free download of Schwarz's book. If you are interested in handtool work it is worth reading, and will give you many different ideas of what might work for you. Oh, and forget Ana White, she has no idea what she is talking about. OTOH, if you're power tool oriented, forget everything I just said.

Woodsmith Redwood Garden Bench Plan
Any project that sits outdoors has to withstand the elements. This bench is built from redwood which resists decay. Instead of the usual yellow glue a plastic resin glue was used to weather as well as (and maybe even better than) the redwood. Rust-proof brass screws fasten down the seat slats and a few other pieces. The finish used on the bench is a shop-mixed combination of spar varnish and a tung oil sealer. This combination offers the penetrating protection of an oil and the slight sheen provided by a varnish. And with just a few modifications to the bench you can build a matching Redwood A

r/Workbenches on Reddit: Free wood working bench plans or ones worth the money? I have a bunch of rough poplar..and just got a jointer and planer..
October 7, 2021 -
I have a lot of rough cut poplar that is a little thicker than 1", 6" wide and lenghts up to 10ft. I also just picked up a planer and a jointer.
I am looking for drawing recommendations for a traditional type of wood working bench.
I know poplar is light and soft, but its what I got. I intend laminate the lumber together and used the "sides" for the surface and making the bench top 4" or so thick.
Thoughts?

I've done considerable research here (I'm a bit on the anal side). After hours and hours of deliberation I've decided I'm building the anarchists workbench. Contrary to the name, it's not radical in any way. It's basically a dude who's entire career was spent focussing, in one way or another, on work benches. He's researched the world's history of workbenches and understands why each one is designed how it is. His design, called the anarchist work bench, is basically the culmination of all that research and takes the angle of "a workbench doesn't need to be expensive to work well, but it does need certain characteristics". He made the book available free online, though I personally bought the hard copy because it's awesome. Here's the PDF: https://blog.lostartpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/AWB_Consumer_June-2020_v5.pdf
