I was able to make the drawers slide more easily though by putting some fairly slippery floor varnish on the cabinet where the drawers slide on, and on the bottom of the drawers. Varnish on the rails doesn't always help make them slide better - it very much depends on what kind of varnish you use.

December 3, 2020 - Rub a bar of soap (we used a basic Dove bar here) along the tracks on the bottom of the drawer and in the cabinet/dresser. Make sure to get anywhere wood rubs against wood and give it plenty of soap.

Everything can be done with a table saw, maybe even a circ saw. Some more advanced involve routing a groove into the drawer sides for wood runners to slide in. These types of course require a router, and probably a router table.

February 14, 2025 - Instead of trapping the entire drawer side between guides, this method traps only a cleat mounted to the drawer side [ Drawing, below]. The guides may be separate pieces, or a single grooved piece that the cleat slides in. Because the guides prevent the drawer from tipping while also eliminating side-to-side movement, no side guides are needed.

Have you already assembled the case? What stock will you use to divide the drawers horizontally? I've used wood runners with some vertical stock to keep the drawers from going sideways. The drawers just slides on the runners.

For single sliding dovetails, you end up like option one, but you control the side to side movement for a solid feel. You can also use them as center drawer slides from underneath. For full-slide sliding dovetails, I make the slides like like a small version of a table slide, with wooden dowels holding them together:

November 25, 2023 - Drawer bottom. Since I need to make 3 new drawers for the bedroom I can make them with the needed clearances for either side or undermount slides. If I had to I could make new boxes for the hall or disassemble and reconstruct the existing. I would like to minimize the time and effort required.

August 12, 2003 - Ball bearing slides have there place, but for some pieces, they just aren't the solution. Here is what I would do. For smaller drawers, I would simply have the solid wood drawer box ride on the bottom of their sides on "L" shaped cleats mounted in the case The bottom of the "L" is where the drawer rides and the side of the "L" is what keeps the drawer in place side-to-side.
