Thoughts on the Work Sharp Ken Onion Mk. 2?
I owned the first version but did not have the Blade Grinding Attachment. I ended up not liking the results I got and found it wasn’t as foolproof as I had hoped. Fast forward to the release of the Mk.2: I bought it just because it came with a limited edition badge. That’s how ridiculous I am. I found the cassette with the guide to be just as difficult as the first time around. However, this version came with the Blade Grinding Attachment, so I figured I’d give it a whirl. It ended up being awesome. There is a learning curve, but I swear it’s less steep than using that guided cassette. I first practiced on my brother-in-law’s knives because he sucks. They turned out to be pretty sharp, and I didn’t screw anything up! With practice, I started to feel more confident and began to sharpen my own kitchen knives, then my pocket knives, and even some random things like a machete and a karambit. Now, I feel confident using it and love that I can use it as a belt grinder for flattening the spine or even thinning a blade. More on reddit.com

Any skill takes a bit if time to acquire. Smiths tri hone and a four sided wooden strop is a good start. Some knives may require a file to get started if they are very dull. I was self taught and it took me months to figure it out. I still need to keep the steps in mind and not get impatient... More on rokslide.com

March 6, 2023 - For general everyday carry knives, like the folder in your pocket, the Work Sharp Ken Onion Edition will leave you with a mirror polish in as little as 5 or 10 minutes. In fact, the edge I’ve gotten with this sharpener has beaten every factory edge I’ve ever received. I’m sure, if you’re reading this review you have already looked up all of the specs of this machine, but here are a couple:

Work Sharp Releases the Ken Onion Edition MK.2 Sharpening System
July 29, 2025 - Having used the MK.1 for years, when I first got the MK.2 I noticed that it was so familiar, yet so different, at the same time. I was stoked to get to work with it. As you would expect, although much easier to use than the original, the Triangle Cassette Sharpener was very straightforward.

r/sharpening on Reddit: Thoughts on the Work Sharp Ken Onion Mk. 2?
July 13, 2024 -
I first started sharpening knives with whetstones, but now I’m thinking of getting an electric belt sharpener like the Work Sharp Ken Onion to fix serious chips on knives. Has anyone used the Ken Onion machines? What are your thoughts on them?

If you buy the knife grinder attachment it’s actually pretty good. Knife grinders Au did a video about how this model specifically can ruin heat treat using laquers that change color at different temps. Basically low speeds at low grits not a problem at higher grits you’ll need to use some kind of honing coolant to avoid re tempering the steel.

March 26, 2023 - I've been a Work Sharp fan and user for years. My go-to sharpener for almost everything---small blades to large---is the Ken Onion belt sharpener. I prefer it as is, without the blade grinder attachment. And I use it freehand as I find the little angle guide just gets in the way.

Ken Onion Worksharp Review — Everyday Commentary
August 23, 2017 - Since unboxing the kit it has sat, plugged in on my workshop bench, ready to burnish blades to brilliant beauty (oh...). My BK9 has a new edge on it, as does my Schrade SCH36, and a dozen or so other blades. And these aren't the toothy chop jobs you typically get on big knives--these are real, useful, and high end edges. I have never had a 1/4 inch thick blade get sharp enough to slice (not tear) paper towels. Now I have two of them--both big choppers are hair-popping sharp. In this review I will take a look at the Worksharp and the grinder attachment.

November 7, 2024 - Work sharp professional precision adjust. A nice upgrade from the plastic original model. It's a little spendy but cheaper than an edge pro or wicked edge. Takes a little time but you can make some crazy sharp knives and no guess work with your angles. I have never been good at a stone or anything ...

February 19, 2024 - I have one of those early MK2 type sharpeners. Rarely use any belt grip other than the grey 6000. A severely damaged blade will get shaped with the red belt, but it removes metal pretty quick. After using any of my knives they get a wash and hone with the 6000 grit belt. Only takes a couple swipes per side to restore razor sharpness. A lot of folks have commented on the Ken Onion model, but have never used one or even seen one up close. If I were buying a Work Sharp for the first time, I'd look closely at both types.
