Whenever I open a youtube link it just takes me to chrome rather than playing in the in app player like it used to. Been happening for a few weeks now. Can't remember if it was an app update or system update that broke it.
Edit: Well apparently after trying to figure this out for weeks, all I had to do was finally make a post, and I would figure it out myself within minutes.
To fix it, I went to my default app settings, youtube app, turned off "open supported links" then turned it back on, then opened the actual youtube app. I think simply opening the actual youtube app is what did it. Weird.
YouTube links open in chrome browser instead of YouTube app.
Device: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3
Carrier: AT&T
OS: Android 12, One UI version 4.0
Chrome version 99.0.4844.58
Steps to experience the issue:
-
Open the Chrome app.
-
Paste the following URL into the address bar at the top of the browser: https://youtu.be/KmtzQCSh6xk
-
Tap the enter key or whatever it's called.
Current behavior: Upon executing the above steps, the web based version of the YouTube video will load into the browser.
Desired behavior: The video should open within the YouTube app.
Things I have tried which did not work:
Settings->Apps->YouTube ->Set as default->Open supported links (enabled)
Settings->Apps->Choose default apps ->Open links in app (enabled).
Settings->Apps ->Choose default apps->Opening Links ->YouTube->Open supported links (enabled).
Restart phone.
Uninstall and reinstall YouTube: can not uninstall YouTube because it is a system app. I was able to uninstall the updates and then reinstall them.
Uninstall and reinstall Chrome: can not uninstall Chrome because it is a system app. I was able to uninstall the updates and then reinstall them.
Other relevant information: This is a brand new phone. I just got it a few days ago.
I tried using the default Samsung "internet" browser. Did not work there either despite enabling "open links in other apps" within the in-app settings.
I'm at my wits end. Hoping I don't have to do a factory reset to resolve this. Please help, thank you!
Edit: after continuing to troubleshoot I found that links found on the web and links sent through Signal open the YouTube app as expected. It is only when I paste a URL directly into the address bar that the video loads within the browser instead of the YT app.
Edit 2: Tried installing Vanced and editing the relevant settings. Behavior was unchanged.
Edit 3: I found a workaround: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tasomaniac.openwith
Until today it was possible to create a shortcut from the three dots menu, but now, when entering the YouTube site, you will see the "install" prompt in the omnibox.
Install YouTube.Three dots menu.
Youtube isn’t working on google chrome after the new update. Every video I open has a black screen that says “an error occurred. Please try again later. (Playback ID: random combo of letters and numbers). Learn more” and when I click on learn more a blank popup comes up. Anyone know what’s going on?
When I try to login, it ask me to add another account. When I tried to add the same email again, it won't let me ("This account already exists on your device"). Is there anyway to login to twice? I have developer mode enabled btw, so if there's any developer mode command that can force this, please share. Thanks.
